Sept 2024

In our first official ROCKS event of the 2024-2025 school year, we were honored to host COL (R) Tal Sullivan as our guest speaker. A distinguished retiree, COL (R) Sullivan has dedicated his post-military career to advancing the Army's Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) program. His extensive experience and insights provided a comprehensive overview of this transformative initiative, capturing the interest of our cadets and deepening their engagement with the ROCKS program.

COL (R) Sullivan offered a valuable contrast between the Army's traditional approaches to fitness and the innovative H2F program. By examining the historical evolution of Army fitness philosophies, he illustrated the reasons behind the shift towards a more holistic strategy. This new approach emphasizes long-term readiness and incorporates dimensions such as resiliency and spirituality, moving beyond mere physical training.

During his presentation, COL (R) Sullivan meticulously covered each of the five domains of the H2F program. He also highlighted the critical importance of mental health, with support from LTC Favors, a Hampton University graduate and Behavioral Health expert stationed at Fort Eustis. Together, they provided a thorough discussion on the role of mental well-being in overall fitness and readiness.

As we embark on another dynamic year, we are excited to continue promoting the significance of the ROCKS program and fostering mentorship through our services with the Hampton University cadets. Stay tuned for more engaging events and opportunities to connect with leaders and experts in the field.

The Rocks Has A New Chapter And It Is Located At Hampton University

Written by: 2LT (R) Alyssa Sutton and LTC (R)Claude Vann

November 2023

Veterans Day, November 11th, 2023, will be a historical marker for Hampton University’s Military Legacy. On this date Hampton University became the first HBCU to be chartered into The Rocks Inc. A vision which President Darrell Williams, LTG(R) had before he took the reins of the University on 1 July 2022. Focusing on the Rocks’ precept of mentoring young leaders for service in our Military, he ignited the fuse among alumni to formulate a team to obtain a Chapter for the University. The value/impact for Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers coming out of Hampton University in future years will be immeasurable.

Chartering of the Chapter could not have occurred without the efforts of COL(R) Angie Hemingway assisting 2LT (R) Alyssa Sutton through the process once she announced she would be the one spearheading this effort. The call to action sent to Hampton military alumni resourced unwavering support to 2LT Sutton and within a matter of days she had enough people to start her charter document to request Interest Group status. LTC (R) Claude Vann assisted throughout the process to ensure no roadblocks would slow their process down. The process from Interest Group to Chapter took about 9 months.

The Chartering Ceremony that occurred on November 11,2023, began with CPT(P) Justin Bingham opening and giving a brief history about The Rocks Inc. He then introduced President Darrell Williams, LTG (R) to speak. President Williams discussed his vision for the program and mentioned his initial conversations with BG (R) Lawrence Gillespie about starting the Chapter prior to him officially taking office as the President of Hampton University. BG (R) Gillespie then led the official chartering of the Chapter honoring the Board Members that were present. The ceremony closed with 2LT Sutton sharing her Army story with the audience and her purpose

for leading this Chapter.

2LT (R) Sutton reflected on her time in the Hampton ROTC program and how her sense of resiliency came from her lessons learned as a young cadet. She was faced with many hurdles due to injuries she sustained at her time at the Leadership Development Assessment Course (LDAC). She was required to attend LDAC consecutively for 3 years to finally obtain her Army commission in the Summer of 2013 due to the injuries she faced each time at camp.

She discussed the importance the mentorship and how those important relationships gained in the ROTC program taught her to never give up on herself. She was unable to fulfill her obligation on active duty and was medically retired early in her career. She felt that starting this chapter was her way of making a difference by giving back to an institution that had given so much to her. 2LT Sutton hopes that this new chapter will provide endless benefit to the cadets and midshipmen on campus. She wants this program to provide them with the additional mentorship and professional development needed so they can be successful no matter where life takes them

in their careers.
