Over the weekend, the Hampton University Army ROTC program etched its name in history with its first all-female commissioning class. Four remarkable individuals, 2LT Larrielle Lockwood, 2LT Ciara Hanson, 2LT Jada Haskins, and 2LT Samantha Hamilton, proudly received their gold bars, marking the beginning of their journey as commissioned officers.
Both 2LT Haskins and Lockwood are set to serve as active duty officers in the Transportation Corps, while 2LT Hamilton and Hanson will fulfill roles as reserve officers in the Quartermaster Corps.
The commissioning ceremony was graced by the presence of MG Patricia Wallace, Commanding General of the 80th Training Command, who delivered an inspiring message to the newly commissioned lieutenants. She urged them to express gratitude to those who supported their journey, to disregard the naysayers, to remain prepared for future challenges, and to reflect on the decisions that led them to this momentous occasion. MG Wallace's words resonated deeply with the lieutenants, their families, friends, and the members of the HU Rocks chapter in attendance.
Alyssa Sutton, President of the HU Rocks Chapter, bestowed each Lieutenant with an Army Notebook, pen, 2LT Challenge coin, and a personalized note. Emphasizing the importance of preparedness, Sutton highlighted the significance of having pen and paper at the ready for any situation. She also took the time to personally congratulate each new officer and extended her support as they embark on their military careers.
The commissioning of Hampton University's first all-female class not only marks a historic milestone but also underscores the institution's commitment to diversity, excellence, and the empowerment of future leaders in the armed forces.
