Brigadier General CLARA L. ADAMS-ENDER

U.S. Army, Retired

Brigadier General Clara L. Adams-Ender was born in Wake County, NC.  She received her Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro, NC; a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN and a Master of Military Art and Science degree from the Army command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS.  She has been awarded eight honorary doctorate degrees in law, public service, humane letters and science.  Her military education includes the Command and General Staff College, the U.S. Army War College and the CAPSTONE Course on Military Operations with Joint and Combined forces.

 

A veteran of 34 years in the Army, General Adams-Ender held such diverse assignments as Chief Nurse of two medical centers, Assistant Professor of Nursing, Inspector General and Chief Army Nurse Recruiter.  Her overseas assignments included Korea and Germany, where she served as an intensive care nurse, REFORGER Chief Nurse, Medical Center Chief Nurse and Nursing Consultant, Chief, Department of Nursing, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC.  She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.  As a General Officer, she served as Chief of the Army Nurse Corps, and in 1988, she became the first Army Nurse Corps Officer to be appointed as Director of Personnel for the Surgeon General of the Army.  In 1991, she was the first Army Nurse Corps Chief to be continued on active duty and was subsequently confirmed as a line general officer.  She was assigned as Deputy Commanding General, Military District of Washington and Commanding General, Fort Belvoir, VA.

Her awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Cross of Honor in Gold from the German Army, Meritorious Service Medal, the coveted Surgeon General’s “A” professional designator for excellence in nursing administration, the Roy Wilkins Meritorious Service Award of the NAACP and the Gertrude E. Rush Award for Leadership from the National Bar Association.

 

In 1967, General Adams-Ender became the first female in the U.S. Army to qualify for and be awarded the Expert Field Medical Badge.  General Adams-Ender retired on September 1, 1993.  She is President/CEO of CAPE Associates, Inc.

 

She currently resides in Lake Ridge, VA with her husband, Dr. F. Heinz Ender.

Major General HARRY W. BROOKS, JR.

U.S. Army, Retired

 

Major General Harry W. Brooks Jr. was born in Indianapolis, IN on May 17, 1928.  He enlisted in the Army on May 21, 1947 and achieved the rank of Sergeant.  In 1949, General Brooks completed Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a Quartermaster Second Lieutenant.

 

He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Omaha in 1962.  In 1973 he earned a Masters of Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma.  General Brooks transferred from Quartermaster to Field Artillery.  His military education includes Command and General Staff College and the Army War College.

 

He served in a number of commands as Assistant Division Commander, 2nd Infantry Division, Korea and Commanding General, 25th Infantry Division, Scholfield Barracks, HI.  Additional assignments included duty with the 519th Field Artillery Battalion; 553rd Field Artillery Battalion and the 3rd Howitzer Battalion, 18th Artillery, Reserve Advisor in NY.  In 1966, he commanded 2nd Battalion, 40th Field Artillery, 199th Light Infantry Brigade, Fort Benning, GA.  Later that year, General Brooks led the battalion to Vietnam.  After a 12-month tour in Vietnam, General Brooks was assigned as a staff officer in the Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff, Force Development, in Washington D.C.

He returned to Europe in 1970 as commander of the 72nd Field Artillery Group.  Two years later, MG Brooks was assigned once more to Washington where he served as the Director of Equal Opportunity Programs and Chief of Equal Opportunity Division, Directorate of Military Personnel Policies, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel.

 

General Brooks retired in September, 1976.  He and his wife, June reside in Burlingame, CA.
